Farrer’s Tea & Coffee Merchants · Est. 1819
Our Story, Two Centuries in the Making

Founded in 1819

Founded in 1819 in the market town of Kendal, Farrer’s is one of the UK’s longest-standing tea and coffee merchants. What began as a small shop roasting and blending on Stricklandgate grew up alongside the town itself, serving locals, traders and travellers passing through the Lake District. For more than two centuries, the aroma of Farrer’s coffee has been part of daily life in Kendal, with original recipes – including some of our best-loved blends – handed down through generations, refined but never rushed. That long history of careful roasting and blending is still the foundation of everything we do today.

Heritage Flavour & Variety

From time-honoured house blends to seasonal specials and single origins, our range brings together over 200 years of roasting know-how. Carefully selected by our team, there’s a Farrer’s coffee or tea for every palate.

Fresh from Our Kendal Roastery

We roast in considered batches at our Lake District roastery to keep every bag tasting its best. Beans are packed quickly after roasting so the flavour in your cup is as fresh as the day it left Kendal.

Coffee Delivered Your Way

Keep the cupboard stocked with Farrer’s favourites on repeat. Our flexible coffee subscriptions mean your chosen blends arrive when you need them, so you’re never without a good brew.

Considered, Responsible Sourcing

We work with trusted partners and long-term producers who share our values on quality and ethics, choosing coffees and teas that support more sustainable, transparent supply chains wherever possible.

Farrer's Today

Today we carefully source our coffees and teas from trusted partners around the world, then roast in considered batches at our Lake District roastery to bring out the character of each origin. We pack quickly to lock in freshness from Kendal to your cup, whether you’re brewing at home or serving a busy coffee bar. You’ll find Farrer’s being poured in independent cafés, hotels, restaurants and farm shops, as well as brewed in kitchens across the UK by people who value consistency, quality and a touch of Lakeland heritage in their daily brew. Whether you’re discovering us for the first time or have been drinking Farrer’s for years, our aim is simple: honest, consistently good tea and coffee, shaped by over 200 years of craft.

Frequently asked question

Yes. While our roots are firmly in Kendal and the Lake District, we supply coffee, tea and supporting products to cafés, hotels, restaurants, farm shops and offices across the UK. Trade customers get access to our full range, competitive pricing and support to help choose the right coffees, teas and brewing kit for their setup.

Do you supply coffee and tea wholesale outside the Lake District?

Yes, you can. We offer bookable Coffee Roastery Experience Days where you can step inside our working roastery, learn how we roast, taste coffees from around the world and create your own blend to take home. We also host professional training sessions on site for baristas and trade customers – keep an eye on our website or get in touch for upcoming dates.

We don’t just drop off bags and disappear. Trade partners can tap into menu advice, equipment guidance, dial-in support and certified barista training to help raise standards across the team. Whether you’re opening your first site or refreshing an established offer, we’ll work with you to build a coffee and tea range that fits your style, budget and customers.

Very few roasters can say they’ve been roasting in the same town since 1819. Our history in Kendal runs alongside the story of the Lake District itself, and many of our much-loved blends have been refined over generations. Today we combine that heritage with careful sourcing, considered roasting and modern quality control, so whether you’re a local in Cumbria or a café hundreds of miles away, you get the same reliable cup – with a little bit of Lakeland in every brew.

We roast in small, regular batches at our Kendal roastery and pack shortly after roasting to lock in flavour. Most orders are dispatched within a few days of roasting, so whether you’re a trade customer or buying for home, your coffee arrives fresh and ready to serve at its best.
