1. BUTTERED COFFEE AKA “KETO COFFEE”
Surprisingly, buttered coffee hasn’t gone away and it’s becoming ever more popular, especially with people who don’t eat breakfast.
Simply add a tablespoon of butter to your coffee to enhance its flavour profile which allegedly provides a steady, long-lasting energy hit without a blood sugar crash.
In theory, the fat in the butter slows down your metabolism, which means the caffeine in the coffee is absorbed at a much slower rate therefore providing a longer lasting energy boost.
Keto coffee has become popular amongst a number of celebrities and a smaller number of professional athletes; as a result this coffee trend is spreading and gaining a bit of a following.
2. SPECIALITY COFFEE-BASED DRINKS
2020 saw the rise of Dalgona coffee with people attempting to replicate the taste and texture of the coffee shop in their own home. Although, of course if you wanted to bring the coffee shop home you could simply buy your coffee from us!
Specialty coffee-based drinks will continue to be a growing trend in the coffee industry in 2021. The industry is expanding their offering with an even increasing variety of coffee drinks and flavoured beverages for an ever-evolving coffee-drinking audience.
Now, when you go to a coffee shop, there are dozens of drinks you can choose from, with anything from iced brews through to coffee shakes and obviously more classic coffee choices.
3. COFFEE SUBSCRIPTIONS
With customers brewing craft cups of coffee at home in the face of COVID-19, coffee subscription boxes have really increased in popularity.
As a result, more people are actively searching for variety as they seek to expand their palate and the choices available to them and find their particular favourites. One of the biggest benefits of a coffee subscription is convenience; they’re delivered direct to your door in letterbox friendly packaging and can be set up on a monthly recurring basis.
Coffee subscriptions are also a great gift idea for friends and family. It’s (literally!) the gift that keeps on giving.
Lockdown has impacted on many of us. Working from home has become commonplace and a new cultural norm. With the potential for increasing infection rates, restrictions are constantly being adapted and added to which has resulted in businesses getting more creative with how they can engage their customer base from home.
Many companies have developed a range of insperiences, a series of in-home experiences where people can taste, learn, do and get involved in the comfort of their own home using platforms like Zoom, things like blind coffee tastings, home barista experiences and the like.
According to Barclays, over a third of consumers who bought into Insperiences in 2020 will continue investing from activities like virtual wine tasting, home workouts and remote styling sessions.

Sustainability will play an ever-increasing role in the coffee market, especially as we begin to move past the impact of COVID-19.
Food and drink packaging has been under scrutiny over the last few years. However alongside that the pandemic has raised a significant awareness among many of us as to the origin of our food and drink. That holds true for coffee too, we want to know where the coffee we drink comes from, how it’s grown, how it’s harvested, if the growers are paid a fair price, and if the whole process is ethical.
Coffee drinkers no longer just want coffee to be packaged sustainably they also want coffee that is sustainably sourced too.
6. SUPERIOR QUALITY COFFEES (THIRD WAVE)
Third Wave coffee has been a coffee trend for a number of years, but its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning.
Customers are going out of their way to find superior-quality coffee products, they are actively searching for the best they can get their hands on by looking for unique small batch single origin coffees that are sustainably sourced, with a great back story and above all else delivering a distinctive taste.
Snapchilling is slowly replacing cold brewing, and that’s no real surprise, especially as snapchilled coffee takes a lot less time to create than cold brew and it has heaps more flavour too!
It’s also a much better alternative to iced coffee, primarily because you don’t have to add ice cubes, which dilutes it.
8. CANNED & BOTTLES COFFEE
Canned and bottled coffees are becoming a staple in the grab and go sector, especially as there’s no additional cost to retailers to include them in fridges and vending machines.
Expect them to grow in popularity, especially with younger audiences.
9. HEALTHY COFFEE
Healthy coffees will come to the fore as people look at how they can reduce their fat intake, increase their overall health, and in particular their gut health.
Happily coffee ticks the gut health box as it’s a fermented food (but only when enjoyed black or with plant based milks!). Coffee alternatives are also coming to the fore, including mushroom coffees and chicory root coffees.

Coffee tourism is becoming a thing, and once the pandemic is behind us coffee drinkers will be once more seeking out authentic experiences in unique coffee growing and harvesting settings around the world, very much like the field-to-fork movement, alongside that people are also seeking out educational coffee experiences centred around their coffee shop or their coffee supplier.
11. PLANT-BASED MILKS
Plant-based milks are becoming ever more popular as a replacement for milk in coffee. It’s a coffee trend that will only continue to grow over the next decade.
