You may not know it but it’s National Plant Power Day on 7th March. Plant Power Day is dedicated to inspiring people to think about what they consume and to make healthier choices when it comes to deciding what to eat and drink.


It’s well documented that there are serious benefits to eating more veg, beans, fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Simply put eating a plant-based diet can help lower hypertension and reduce stress, reduce the risk of heart disease, help control diabetes, help with weight loss, reduce the risk of cancer and even prevent the risk of blindness in later life.

But a plant-based diet isn’t necessarily what you might think. It really all can depend on who you ask. Generally, it’s an eating style that emphasizes real, whole foods that come from plants. But ultimately, it’s nothing new. After all, the Mediterranean diet is essentially underpinned by plant-based foods, alongside fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, and yogurt a few times a week, and on occasion meat as well.

Things that generally figure large are vegetables like kale, spinach, tomatoes, cauliflower, potatoes, squash. Whole grains like brown rice, oats, quinoa, barley. Legumes like peas, chickpeas, lentils, peanuts and beans. Nuts, seeds, fruits, plant-based oils herbs and spices, fruits and unsweetened drinks like coffee, tea and not forgetting water.


Plant-based doesn’t mean eliminating food groups or lean sources of protein totally! It’s much friendlier than that, simply eat lots of vegetables. Make sure you include plenty of colour when choosing your foods and change the way you think about meat. Have smaller amounts and treat it as garnish rather than the main event. Choose good fats. Fats in olive oil, olives, nuts and nut butters, seeds are particularly healthy choices. Cook a vegetarian meal at least one night a week. Build these meals around beans, whole grains, and vegetables. Include whole grains for breakfast and add some nuts or seeds along with fresh fruit. Eat fruit for dessert and that will satisfy any craving for a sweet treat.
